Community Events

Northumberland's 2009-2010 Community Events Committee Co-Heads are Devon Chisholm and Jessica Lockhart. The community events committee is meant to connect the student body to their community. We not only participate in events throughout our community, but we also host events. Our year begins with the Terry Fox Events, planning and organizing the community run/walk usually in the second week of September. Previous years it has been held on Greenhill, however starting this year it is being held at NRHS. Advertisements are put out all over the county. Everyone in the community is welcome. The Terry Fox spirit continues through the month as NRHS has their own school run/walk as well as a BBQ fundraiser at lunchtime.

Our next event is the Wake-a-Thon during the first week of December. The Wake-a-Thon is one of our school's largest fundraisers for our community with all proceeds going directly to our local organizations. It is also an event looked forward to by the students at NRHS as it is so much fun! Students arrive at the school around 9:00pm and stay awake at the school all night until 6:30am. Throughout the night there are fun activities planned, but also tons of time to spend with your friends. An event that the Community Events committee gathers students for is the Big Brothers Big Sisters Annual Bowl for Kids Sake Event. This event takes place in April, where all proceeds go to our local Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. Each year there is a theme, thus costumes are encouraged, as well as a school challenge against our local rivals! Following Bowl for Kids is the MS Walk in May. NRHS students gather at Trenton Park with many other community members to walk for an hour and raise money for this great cause.

The Communtiy Events Committee finishes the year with the annual Race on the River Dragon Boat Races. This exciting community wide event takes place in August where NRHS races against NNEC and PA in a school challenge. The team is gathered in June and updated through email during the summer. There is one practice for the team and it is usually a day or two before the race. There is a limited amount of space in the boat so be sure to sign up early, it is a lot of fun!

The Community Events Committee does not have regular meetings, however there is an email list to which we send all the updates on what's going on in your community. If you'd like to receive these emails or have any questions / suggestions, feel free to email one of us at devonchisholm15@gmail.com, or jessicalockhart5@gmail.com. There are more events the Community Events Committee participates in and we are always open to any of you have any suggestions/ concerns/ questions about community events, please do not hesitate to contact me or Devon C., we'd love to hear your ideas!!
